Drawing becomes more engaging when the object has its own story. Here’s a glimpse into the past of the Yeovil Bridge Toll House before you bring it to life on paper.

Yeovil Bridge Toll House

This small stone house appeared in 1856 next to the bridge over the River Yeo in the English town of Yeovil. It was built for £250 (about £35,000 today) and served an important role — this was where travelers paid the toll for crossing the bridge.

The building was designed by architect Robert Shout. Its distinctive feature is the central triangular section with windows, allowing the toll keeper to watch the road from both directions. A clock was even planned for the facade, although it is unclear whether it was ever actually installed.

Today, this house is a Grade II listed building and serves as a reminder of the times when traveling through English towns always meant a stop at such small “gates.”
